Is $200 Too Much For a Tour T-Shirt?
Coming from someone who once spent $60 on a Miley Cyrus tour t-shirt, yes, $200 is a crazy price to pay for any t-shirt.
According to Miles Raymer at Esquire, it seems as though the crazy expensive tour t-shirt may become much more common place as artists try to one up each other with audacious and outrageous merch.
“Instead of trying to outdo each other in sales, today’s pop stars are vying to come up with ever more outlandish, desirable, and profitable merch”, writes Raymer.
Justin Bieber recently made a copy of an old Marilyn Manson tour T-shirt, slapped the word “BIEBER” on the back, and put a price tag of $200 on it.
It sold out in a week.
Obviously Bieber isn’t the only one selling high end merch at concerts, he’s just the most recent. Artists like Kanye, Rihanna, Tyler the Creator, and Drake have been doing it with their own clothing lines for years.
And as people keep buying t-shirts that cost as much as my car payment, artists are going to keep cranking them out.
But with vintage Ramones shirts going for $600 or more, maybe band t-shirts are a smart investment. Or not.
